This show brings together the work of three established women painters, who all have a special focus on painting in and around the five boroughs of New York City. Valeri Larko works primarily on location, often in abandoned locations off the beaten path in the Bronx. Her studio is located in New Rochelle and she returns over and over again to each location, spending many hours in each spot as she builds up details from observation. Gwyneth Leech works in her Hell’s Kitchen studio on paintings that explore the ever-changing urban landscape of Manhattan. Along with the familiar orange of construction scaffolding, in some compositions, homeless figures and their makeshift living structures are part of the picture. Pamela Talese has a practice that includes painting in and around the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where her studio is located. She is able to use her bike to explore different locations on the Brooklyn waterfront, often including various ships.
All three artists express the urban landscape with a sensitivity to light, and show the amazing variety in the landscape of New York City specifically. They each use their own unique visual language in paint, bringing attention to the amazing array that is here in our everyday surroundings but can easily be overlooked.
