Catalina Aranguren –“cognition”
A photographic exhibition that explores the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through one’s own experiences and senses. The artist attempts to capture a specific glimpse of life; depending on the moment, the instant can become an image that is large, graphic, abstract. It may help to take a step back to get a wider view. On the other hand, a different image becomes reminiscent of a memory, invoking the viewer to move towards it in order to grasp its intricacies. In both instances, Aranguren’s photographs present a, sliver of time, both past and present, uncanny and foreign. She invites the viewer to develop their own narrative about her work using cues from their own memory.

“Iron Clad, Fancy Free”
African iron — artifacts of prestige, weaponry and currency — drawn from the collection of art historian Professor Philip Gould — offers insight into the extraordinary imaginations of blacksmiths within tribal traditions. “While practicality was the high priority in the fabrication of iron objects, the most intractable of materials has also led to Africa’s most fruitful expression of fantasy,” says Gould, a lifelong collector.
