Harlem Memorabilia: Reflections in Fiber
Harlem Memorabilia: Reflections in Fiber features the incredible
work of a community of urban artists guided by noted Harlem artist
and quilt-maker Dindga McCannon. The exhibit exemplifies the wide
variety of ways one can preserve memorabilia and transform it into
art. A stunning collection of quilts and hand-made books, created
with personal mementos-- family photos, movie tickets, rent receipts, love letters--tell visual stories that are part of the fabric of Harlem.
The work in this exhibit is the culmination of a three-month
artist-in-residency program featuring Community Works master
artist Dindga McCannon. For several weeks during the summer
and fall, Ms. McCannon conducted fabric art workshops sharing some
of the innovative techniques for which she is renowned. The group created an array of work combining personal memorabilia with
new and traditional media, utilizing diverse technology from kitchen sink to cutting edge. Participants included both professional fiber
artists and creative community members, all with a connection to
Harlem and stories to tell.
This unique collaboration is a project of the Community Matters
NYC initiative, an innovative network of cultural, civic, and academic institutions all deeply committed to strengthening cultural, social
and artistic bonds in Upper Manhattan. Community Works is so
proud to have collaborated with the Interchurch Center in bringing this work to the public.
