John D. Rockefeller bought the land from Barnard in 1954 with the intention “…to make the land available for some use that would be in keeping with the general nature of the institutions on Morningside Heights.” (New York Times May 10, 1954). In addition to the site Rockefeller also gave a contribution of $2,000.000 through the Sealantic Fund, Inc.
Groundbreaking for the Interchurch Center were held on November 17, 1957.
