I enjoy painting objects that are recognizable but painting them in my own way. This usually means using unexpected colors, textures and sometimes shapes.
I love to paint in watercolor because of the way the water and paint flow on the top of the paper, creating visual effects I could never replicate if I were in complete control of the media. I use large amounts of both paint and water on an almost flat surface, guiding the mixture lightly around with a brush while the sedimentary pigment deposits itself randomly into the slight indentations of the paper. While the paper is still somewhat wet, I drop in plain water and watch the "blooms" further push around the pigment. I try to let the paint mix itself on the paper instead of on the palette.
Fish and bubbles in moving water and architecture with large shadows seem to lend themselves to my techniques. I also enjoy painting old signs, especially from the art deco or art nouveau era as more conservative diversions. Color, contrasts and compositions are dramatic and highly charged.
My art basically describes my personality - unconventional, colorful, sensitive and caring, but not afraid to speak my mind, determined, sometimes extroverted and sometimes introverted. My hope is that the viewer enjoys the work as much as I have in painting it.
